UnionPay Cards become Accepted in Israel for the First Time

May 14, Cai Jianbo, CEO of UnionPay International, and Hagi Heller, CEO of Leumi Card Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement in Shanghai, agreeing to begin the acceptance of UnionPay cards (card number starting with 62) by the merchants and ATMs in Israel. Tamar Yassur, Leumi Card’s Chairman of the Board and Arnon Perlman, Israeli Consul-general in Shanghai attends the signing ceremony.

Leumi Card Ltd. is the first cooperative acquirer of UnionPay International in Israel, providing access to over 40,000 merchants which cover almost all places frequently visited by tourists, and about 360 ATMs across Israel. Bank Leumi is the leading bank in Israel with about 30% market share. Upon conclusion of this agreement, the two sides will promptly push forward the technical preparation and make sure UnionPay cards can be accepted by all these merchants and ATMs within the year. With UnionPay cards, cardholders may save the inconvenience of carrying a large amount of cash, enjoy convenient and safe payment service or withdraw local currency from ATMs without charging the 1%-2% currency conversion fee.

UnionPay International CEO Cai Jianbo says, Israel is a country with very high level of industrialization and economic development. More and more Chinese people or enterprises come to Israel for travel and investment, which brings about increasing demand for UnionPay card cross-border payment service. UnionPay International is being dedicated to build global card acceptance work, continues to promote the use of UnionPay cards overseas and optimize the card-using service. UnionPay International will work together with Leumi Card Ltd. to jointly improve the local UnionPay card acceptance environment and explore the business expansion mode for new markets.

Hagi Heller, CEO of Leumi Card Ltd. says, UnionPay International has gradually grown into a financial, influential and a quality brand. He feels honored to become the first cooperative institution of UnionPay International in Israel, introduce UnionPay cards to Israeli market, and provide excellent payment service to guests coming from afar. At the same time, he is confident that the cooperation between the two sides will bring huge benefits to Leumi Card Ltd. and local merchants.
